Making Math More Engaging & Making Mathcasts Creatable and Accessible by All Students

  At AT Across the Lifespan

Co-presented with Jill Gierach, MSE, ATP, CESA 2, Milton, Wisconsin, USA

Making math more engaging with SMART products and the Smartpen

To engage every student including non-verbal, shy, or other students

Using SMART Response for formative assessment, peer instruction, and more.

Video showing how formative assessment works

Using SMART Boards, Airliners to create engaging lessons and mathcasts.

Live demo (with video embedded below - coming) showing this.

Using a SMART document camera to give students a platform to share their work.

Using a Livescribe Pulse Smartpen to complement a SMART classroom

  1. To capture & share notes with audio
  2. To create talking tests

    YouTube plugin error

  3. To create talking worksheet or test solutions

Read more here:  Livescribe-Enabled Talking Test and Solutions

  4. To create student or teacher pencasts

       Student pencasts (by 6th graders)

Mathcasts

What's a mathcast?

A mathcast is a think aloud about math created by students or a teacher using various technologies which

allow the think aloud to be shared on the internet, mobile devices, DVDS, etc.

Mathcast creation, editing, and sharing methods

  1. Using Livescribe Pulse Smartpen - Pencasts

    YouTube plugin error

  2. Using SMART Notebook + SMART Airliner, Board, or graphics tablet.
  3. Using document camera + video recording.

    See Document Camera Mathcasts

  4. Using Jing or Camtasia Studio.
  5. Using a Flip or other digital camera

Making mathcasts creatable & accessible by

  Dysgraphic students

Using the "Infinite Cloning - Library Method" - Choose the 4th item in table of contents.

This method requires only a mouse.

Example mathcast created by a dysgraphic student:

  Deaf/HOH students

Using YouTube translatable captions & Picture in Picture of interpreter signing

  1. Translatable captions: I (Tim F) need to create a video showing the whole process of doing this but basically all you have to do to create translatable captions for YouTube is upload a script to a video that you own and YouTube will "magically" sync up the two and then make the captions available in 51 languages).
  2. Picture in picture: I used Camtasia Studio to easily add the video with the interpreter signing.

   Example on YouTube

Click on little triangle in bottom right corner and choose CC and then your desired language)

Using picture in picture of sign language interpreter

  Non-verbal students

Example Using WordQ/SpeakQ (which could also be Co:Writer, Read/Write Gold, etc)

The idea here is that a student who is non-verbal could type a script and then use WordQ/SpeakQ, etc
to speak their script for them to add their voice to their mathcast.  Of course they could also ask a verbal
peer (partner) to be their voice but use the script they had written and simply direct them to speak lines
     of their script when needed.

  Blind students

Using tactile graphics + voice explanations on iPods, mPowers, etc

This is the most challenging one but I'm working on it.  Please email me, Tim Fahlberg, with any ideas you may have.  Thanks!  Tim: tim.fahlberg@gmail.com
